Decontamination and Decommissioning (D&D)
Decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) refers to maintaining fire safety during the removal, reduction, or elimination of hazardous materials from a building, site, or facility, and to render those areas safe for the environment and public health. These procedures are necessary when a building has reached the end of its useful life, or if the facility poses a danger to public health or the environment.
Fire protection D&D involves prescribing safeguards for construction, alteration, and demolition operations in order to provide life safety and property protection from fire during such operations.
Decontamination is a process used to purify or remove contaminants, such as hazardous wastes, radioactive materials, and chemicals, from the structure and equipment of a building or facility. The process involves cleaning, purging, and removing materials so that the area is free from toxins or contaminants.
Decommissioning, on the other hand, is the process of rendering the building or facility safe for demolition or repurposing. This involves the removal of hazardous components, such as electrical systems, plumbing, and ventilation systems, to prevent potential hazards and to prepare the building or facility for safe and efficient demolition. The decommissioning process also includes the restoration of the site, as per regulatory requirements, to a state that is safe for occupancy or further use.
